SONGS OF LOVE AND LOSS
The product of a tempestuous affair, Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder shows the composter at his most vulnerable, oscillating between distress and exuberant euphoria. The Ulster Orchestra will be joined by renowned soprano Katherine Broderick for this beautiful piece.
Elgar’s Second Symphony was also written in a maelstrom of emotion. Affected by the loss of several close friends, his relationship with his muse Alice Stuart-Wortley and the turmoil surrounding the death of King Edward VII, Elgar’s work combines his doubts and dreams in a sweeping masterpiece.
Thanks to the generous support of the PRS Foundation’s Resonate programme, the Orchestra is proud to present Howard Skempton’s serenely beautiful Lento – a ‘must-hear’ for fans of Barber’s Adagio for Strings.
