Get Ready to Applaud: ‘Fame: The Musical’ Unveils its Stellar Lead Roles!

The countdown is on at the Millennium Forum for the Youth Musical production of the hit musical, ‘Fame’, which opens at the North West’s premier venue on Wednesday 26th July and runs until Sat 29th July.  This all-local youth version of one of the best-selling musicals of all time will feature the cream of local talent.  Bagging the coveted title roles are Matthew McLaughlin, who plays Nick, and Iona Hassett, as Serena.

Matthew is a 21-year-old actor from Derry and has recently graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music from Queen’s University Belfast. Having played the role of Piangi and understudying the role of The Phantom in the Millennium Forum’s production of ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ last summer, Matthew is delighted to return this summer as Nick Piazza in ‘FAME – The Musical.’ A member of the Playhouse Music Theatre Company’s 2022 cohort also, he was honoured to represent Kevin McElhinney in the critically acclaimed production ‘The White Handkerchief’ and to form part of the ensemble for ‘HUME: Beyond Belief’. Other recent credits include ‘The Producers’ (Derry Playhouse),  ‘Siege Tales (Blue Eagle Productions), ‘Dance Your Troubles Away’ (short) and ‘Over Twelve Arches’ (short). Matthew has enjoyed every moment in the process of bringing ‘FAME’ from the rehearsal room to the stage and cannot wait for you to enjoy the result of the hard work of the cast, crew and creatives over the past month.

Joining Matthew as Serena, Omagh girl, Iona Hassett is a 19-year actress, she is currently studying performing arts at North West Regional College. Iona is no stranger to the stage and has performed as Tracy Turnblad in the OHS production of “Hairspray”, most recently she has performed in the North West Regional College’s “Romeo and Juliet” playing the role of Gregory. Iona has performed as a dancer and a member of the ensemble in a variety of other productions. Iona is very excited to be playing the role of Serena Katz in fame and cannot wait to take the stage this July with such a talented cast.
